In this post (and subsequent ones), I will show you how to create a PPC campaign that not only attracts, but CONVERTS when people land on your page. I will show examples below.

First, in order to have a successful PPC campaign, and like with any advertising, you must know your audience and target. You must know what they are searching for and what keywords they are using to find it. I go over how to find out what people are looking for within other articles here on Ezine Articles.

As a basic recap, you have to get into your customers shoes. Think of what search phrases you would use if you were buying your product or service. As an example, let’s say you sell barbecue grills. Some phrases you may enter in the search engine are “cheap bbq grills” or “gas powered bbq”.

Narrow it down to keywords they are using to find what they want using this “in their shoes” method. Write down these keywords on a list. You are going to use them in your PPC campaign.

A Google or Yahoo PPC “how to setup a campaign” would be beyond the scope of this post, and there are plenty of tutorials on how to do this in their respective platforms. For the purposes here, I will assume you have a campaign set up already.

Here are the “secrets” to a successfully run PPC campaign:

1) Set a daily budget limit. This may be obvious, but sometimes beginners overlook this crucial element and get positively KILLED.

For example, both Yahoo and Google have “daily limits” you can set on how much you’d like to spend on your clicks, whether it’s a day or 00. It’s up to you.

The option that leaves lots of people in the dust when they aren’t paying attention is the “no daily budget” option. You pay for however many clicks you get without a budget limit. In other words, you haven’t put a cap on how much you can spend in a day.

For beginners especially, it is very important you put a cap on it until:

A) You know what you are doing with PPC (have mastered it)

B) Have enough money to spend on virtually unlimited campaigns (money to burn).

For now, put a limit on your daily spending budget. PPC can get pretty expensive pretty quickly. You will get killed if you don’t know what you are doing. Set your budget according to what you deem appropriate.

2) Use keywords related to major keywords. In any market, there is the potential for saturation. This holds true for keywords, too. Unless you are involved in marketing something completely alien to most people and targeted to an extremely small niche, you are going to have vast amounts of competition for certain keywords.

For instance, “annuity buyer” is a TREMENDOUSLY competitive keyword phrase and the clicks generate up to 0.00 per click!

Not many new or veteran marketers would be willing to shell out this amount of money per click. This is why it’s important to experiment and find alternative keyword phrases for your ads. For example, instead of anuity buyer, you could use:

These are just a few and they’re off the top of my head, and they MAY be less expensive than the 0/click phrase above. You get the idea. Experiment, be creative and most importantly, TEST.

I have found allot of talk around the net with regards to submitting articles to directories to get the best results. Some will tell you to submit your article to as many directories as possible. Now this is just fine but here are some things that I have found along the way.

It takes allot of time to submit your articles to hundreds of directories, so intern people look for a submission service like Article Marketer and Isnare. These are great services and do get the job done. Others will use an article submission tool. Some of these submitters will automatically submit your article while others are semi automatic, where you are required to press ok after each and every directory site.

Now if you choose these options here is what I would recommend. Be careful of the services that tell you they your article will be submitted to 1′000s of directories. Many of these directories may not even be related to your article. For example an article on fishing does not really belong in a business article directory.

Be careful how much money and time you spend submitting your articles. Some Authors will change their articles around just a bit for each directory submission. I have found this can be a good practice if your article gets ranked on the same keyword search page from two different directories. Now you have two similar articles from two different directories filling up that search page. When using this practice change the title a bit while keeping the same keywords change each sentence of the first and last paragraphs along with a couple changes in each paragraph.

Now it is perfectly ok to submit the same exact article to several directories and I have heard allot of hype with regard to the duplicate content post. Now when using an article submitter I prefer a submitter that is semi automatic. This gives me the option to review each submission before I submitted to a directory. Many directories do not have the same categories as others this type of submitter will allow me to make sure the proper category is selected.

Now as an editor of the ArticleStars directory there is one thing that really drives me nuts. Many times I receive articles that are pure slop and many times not even an article. One thing I will say, search engine robots are very picky and will recognize a junk article. One example is an article of 300 words or more all in one paragraph. Use proper paragraph formats. Try and keep your paragraphs around 5 or 6 sentences long. Allow your paragraphs to flow together just as you were taught to grade school. This example is in consideration of the reader.

Next try and avoid repetitive one-sentence paragraphs. I see this all too often. This now does not even look like or sound like an article rather than just a list of statements. If you have something that you would like to list, then begin list with a paragraph and end it with a paragraph.

Don’t write your article like an advertisement and just shove links into the ad like sounding article. Readers will run for cover. Instead write a review on the product or service. Give some back up statements for your comments within the review. Now you have warmed up the reader and it will not look like an advertisement. Avoid affiliate links! Use a landing page such as a blog, squidoo lens or a website. Refer to the link for more information.

With all of this said I can say I use to submit my article to around 150 directories and found that I got the same results as I did when submitting to just the top directories. In order to save time while submitting quality I now just submit my article to the top 25 or so directories and sometimes not even that many. When I am in a hurry I will just submit the article to the top 5 directories.

It is better to submit your article to a few directories with a submission that has a good quality article and categorized correctly, than to submit a poor quality to article to hundreds. Quality will always out perform quantity.

Oh, one other thing to keep in mind. Don’t create a title that is all caps! Just look around the search returns on the net and see how many search return heading you see that are all in caps. Meaning less and less traffic browses their list than what used to. They also ask for a yearly fee, not a one-time fee, of 0 a year. So, in order to submit to them you need make sure you will earn at least 0 a year directly off the traffic & link benefits you gain from the listing listing. In general I consider listings for sites whom I think can be rewarded with an increase of at least a day through higher traffic. I know, an actual positive return on your investment would be around a day, but there are other methods for raising traffic than a Yahoo submission, that would give a much better ROI, so the gains in my mind have to be substantial to justify it.

Best of the Web, what I consider the final of the popular tier directories, has the benefit of being very similar to Yahoo, but better in that they have one time fee submission options. With a one time fee submission you have 5 years, 10 years, to make up the cost, it is much easier to justify than Yahoos yearly fee (Best of the Web also has a yearly fee option). BOTW has been around nearly as long as Yahoo as well, and throughout the submission site Page Ranks are very close. They have less traffic than Yahoo of course, but they are much cheaper too.

Linking is as much about your sites standing as your sites rankings, and I think being discriminating in your submissions is a good thing and will help make sure you do not over do things and trip any present or future filter or penalty.

The Korean Search Engine Marketing is dominated by naver.com. Much more so, than even Google dominates the US. To understand why naver is so successful, let’s go into the details of how things work in Korea and how things differ from the US market.

When we are looking up something that interests us, we “google” it. “Googling” , a recently coined verb, basically means feeding some keywords in a omniscient benevolent search engine to get some results. Higher ranking usually means relevance to the query and therefore exposure.

In Korea, things work in the way Ask Jeeves wanted to work, but never managed to hack it. And they work well.

Why is Korea a “winner take most” search engine market:

The best way to describe Korean Search Engine users is “trolling FAQ’s”. The portals have a knowledge base, organized by questions. Wikipedia, DMOZ, Usenet and Google Answers, while great projects, pale in comparison to the “knowledge iN” of Naver. The system revolves around asking the portal a question, and there is a high likelihood of a lot of answers to that questions by people who cared to write on the subject. The user gets a ranked list of answers and can either choose to read the answers, or a list of similar questions. She navigates through the questions and answers allowing her to refine her search efficiently.

Naver has the most extensive database of questions, and therefore, it is logical for people to use it to get their answers. To get the most exposure, people tend to contribute there the most. Network Effect–giving naver a 75% share of the “question answer” market.

Next we come to what is called meta tags. I know this
sounds like something out of science fiction, but it is really just simple code. Still, it’s worth adding them in the event that a search engine will use meta tags in their ranking formula.

To find out if your page is set up with meta tags, you must access the code. To do this, click the “view” button on the browser menu bar, and select “source.” This will pull up a window revealing the underlying code that created the page. If there are meta tags, they usually appear near the top of the window. For example, a meta tag would read: meta name=”keywords” content=. If you do not find code that reads like this, ask your webmaster to put them in. This may not do much for your search engine rankings, but any little boost helps.

I should first apologize to those more advanced web page designers and internet marketers that have gotten into this article accidently from my slick headline. This article is about basic webpage optimization. I will hope for your forgiveness also for this second transgression: I’m showing newbies just how easy it is to build a webpage for practically any product, service, or other endeavor. This means you can’t charge them thousands of dollars anymore unless they are just completely overwhelmed in the time schedules.

In general, the major search engines function in the same way. This is what they’re looking for in order to identify the theme of the web page:

URL: The URL is the web address of a web page. What can help is to include relevent keywords in the URL for the page, so work with your webmaster (if you still have one after reading this) to create static URLs with keywords included. Don’t try to have 10 different keywords in a URL, though.

Page Title: The page title is the text that appears in the blue bar at the top of your browser. A search engine uses the page title (also called the title tag) to identify pages and show users the relevance of the page. The page title also shows up as the link when a search result is returned. Keep title tags short and precise, between 8-9 words. Every page should have a unique and relevant page title.

Metadata: It should no longer be a secret that meta tags aren’t as important as they used to be. Text: The content of the page should be relevant to the topic mentioned in your title tag, metadata and URL. Make sure you mention your keywords as well as other words that relate to the basic theme of the page. The main idea is to have each page stay in its own theme.

Lots of people focus on things like keyword density (the number of times the keyword is mentioned) and keyword patterns (where the keyword is found, like in the first paragraph, first sentence, last sentence, etc.). Google’s algorithms are constantly getting smarter, and in my opinion, your best strategy (especially for the long term) is to write your content with the user in mind. If you write specifically for your site visitors, you’re creating exactly what the search engines are looking for.

Think of it this way: Being number one in the search rankings is important, but if you’re number two and you’ve optimized your content for the user, you’ll probably get more repeat visitors and sales than if you create pages focusing exclusively on getting better search rankings. Your visitors see what you’re doing fairly easily.

During my recent visit to the United States, I was staying with one of my friends running a super market in Long Island along with a franchise of “Subway.” One day I saw him sitting with a laptop at his residence and passing some instructions to somebody in his office in his super market that was some 20 kilometers from his residence. Suddenly, he asked that person as to why his office had been opened without his (my friend’s) permission. The person from the other end explained his position and satisfied his boss. He was connected to his super market through a video camera and the internet.

Being an entrepreneur, if you hire some workforce, you have to provide them resources as well. You shouldn’t bother about petty things and waste your time on non-issues. I know a gentleman who owned a large indenting business and making millions in defence deals but was extremely miser in providing necessary resources to his staff. I noticed that there was only one typewriter that was being used for typing the entire stuff of the company. You could always see three to four managers lined up in a queue waiting for their turn to get their letters typed on that single typewriter.

An entrepreneur can use his website to introduce his business to a large audience in the shortest possible time. This way, even a small home-based business can easily get international exposure and that too at a negligible cost. Your website should be professionally prepared and be able to convince why people should place their orders at your store despite the fact that millions already exist for the purpose.

If possible, an entrepreneur should get his company certified according to the requirements of the international standard for Quality Management System i.e. ISO 9001. This job should be accomplished right in the beginning so that the company starts on the right foot. But, one word of caution! He must make it a point that he himself gets involved fully during the preparation process. Only then that he would be able to exercise effective control on the quality management system of his company.

An entrepreneur should know how to prioritize his jobs. I know a gentleman who lacked in this quality. He was based in Gulf and dealing in transporting manpower to African countries by chartering airliners from various companies. Once, he won a contract to airlift manpower from his country to a country in Africa. He hired an aircraft and called the passengers on the fixed date without first ensuring landing permission from the host country. He woke up when only two days were left in the departure date whereas 45 days were available to him since the contract was won. The aircraft and the passengers reached the airport at the appointed date and time. Due to various reasons, he couldn’t obtain permission for the next one week. The passengers had to be accommodated in the hotels and the aircraft had to be returned. The gentleman had to incur a colossal loss, running into millions. As a matter of fact, he should have known as to which actions were most important and needed immediate attention besides constant monitoring. If his company had been an ISO 9001 certified company, this problem would never have arisen as everybody in the company would be having his duties in writing and the gentleman entrusted with the duty of obtaining landing permission would have been on the job the moment he had come to know about the company having won the contract!

An entrepreneur has to be extremely judicious in using his resources during the start-up phase of his business; like for example, during the initial phase, he could run his business from his home rather than hiring an office away from his residence. He could take office equipment like fax machine, photostat machine, computers, printers, scanners, etc, on lease rather than purchasing it.

An entrepreneur has to be flexible while conducting business. Suppose he’s running a fast food business and preparing burgers for his customers and it’s running fine; but the people are approaching him with a lot of enquiries for Donuts as well. So, it would be prudent on the part of the entrepreneur to respect the demands of his customers by starting a franchise of the Donuts as well.

Yes, achieving first page rankings or top spots on the search engines is an incredibly desirable accomplishment to many companies who want immediate and noticeable results. But with such a considerable investment in an SEO campaign, you’d think companies in need of search engine optimization services would also be concerned with their overall ROI, especially in light of the current economy.

Vastly improved (or even #1) rankings are rather easy to achieve in an SEO campaign, even by a novice search engine optimization company.
