About the Canadian Web Directory...

What is The Canadian Web Directory?

The web contains numerous directories and many of those web directories are extremely useful. We created The Canadian Web Directory to provide internet users a single place to locate Quality Canadian Sites. We have also done something a bit different from most directories, in that we not only list sites in as specific as possible categories but we also list single pages.

Websites vs. Web Pages

Most web directories, such as DMOZ and Yahoo!, are primarily in the business of listing websites. This is to say, a submission of http://www.smartbomb.ca/ would result in a single directory listing in one vague category dealing with the extremely broad topic of web design.

This approach makes the job of the editors easier, but it is often less than helpful to any directory users who may be looking or researching a specific topic within Web Design, or any other topic.

We realized the need to create categories that are more specific and have a format, which allows for the listing of especially useful web pages alongside websites of the same topic. For this reason, each category has available an area under the websites wherein an editor may list web pages of a site which the editor sees as especially useful.

Professional Editors

While the idea of using all volunteer editors is appealing at first, upon closer inspection this idea creates all sorts of problems.

Professionally edited Yahoo! guarantees review within 7 business days.

A submission to volunteer edited DMOZ may sit unreviewed for two years or more.

Absurdly long waits for submission reviews is not the only problem. Volunteer edited directories also have to deal with spamming of the directory by editors. One other issue we considered is rudeness from volunteer editors who believe they are doing you a favor by populating their personal directories with submissions to your site.

By using professional editors, we avoid these issues. Our staff editors have clearly defined responsibilities and are not about to mistake doing their job with doing a favor.

By paying our staff editors, we are also able to demand a higher level of quality editing.

Self Sufficient

After several years of hearing volunteer edited directories such as DMOZ complain of being short-handed due to lack of volunteers, it's obvious that to be viable a directory must be self sufficient. The reliance on volunteers just doesn’t prove to be a valid option for us.

By charging a nominal fee for inclusion, we are able to have a self-perpetuating web directory destined to grow. Possibly to grow into the largest, most useful web directory on the Internet. (see our Advertising page for info on cost to submit)
